A Map for the Sacred Journey of the Year
Walking the Wheel as a Path of Healing and Remembering
The Medicine Wheel of the Eagle is an ancient map of the soul's journey through the year. It is not a calendar of dates but a living circle of teachings that mirrors the great cycles of nature — the turning of the seasons, the dance of the elements, and the unfolding of life from seed to harvest to rest and back to seed again.
At the Temple of Light, we walk this wheel as a path of healing, transformation, and remembrance. Each direction, each season, and each ceremony opens a doorway into a deeper layer of who we are. The wheel teaches us that nothing in life is linear — that every ending is also a beginning, and every season carries its own medicine.
The wheel is woven from three sacred threads:
- the seasonal cycle — Autumn, Winter, Germination, Spring, Summer, and Harvest
- the four elements — Earth, Air, Water, and Fire
- the four kingdoms — Mineral, Animal, Vegetal, and Spiritual
The wheel begins in the East, the place of the rising sun and the season of spring, where the element of air and the animal kingdom teach us the medicine of new beginnings and clear vision. Moving to the South, we meet the warmth of summer, the element of fire, and the fullness of the heart. In the West we find the season of autumn, the element of water, and the deep waters of emotion and introspection. And in the North we arrive at winter, the element of earth, the place of stillness, wisdom, and the ancestors. According to the NIH Native Voices Archive, this sacred geometry of the four directions has guided Indigenous healing traditions for generations, mapping the seasonal, animal, and botanical relationships that keep human life in harmony with the natural world.
The Medicine Wheel is not a single teaching but a year-long Sacred Hoop that carries us through every season of the soul. Research published in the URNCST Journal highlights how engaging with the full cycle of the wheel supports psychological and holistic health, offering a structured rhythm of reflection, release, and renewal that mirrors the body's own need for balance. When we walk the entire circle rather than a single season, we begin to see our lives whole.
This journey is lovingly gathered in the work of Leo Artese, whose book O Voo da Águia — The Flight of the Eagle — traces the path of the Medicine Wheel as a map of healing and remembrance. You can explore the bibliographic index of his title on Google Books, where the scope of the wheel's teachings is laid out for the seeker.
Together these threads form a complete map of the human experience — body, mind, emotion, and spirit. As you read through the posts that follow, we invite you to walk the wheel slowly, letting each season speak to you in its own voice. There is no rush on this path. The wheel turns in its own time, and so does the soul.
The Medicine Wheel asks nothing of us but presence. It does not demand that we master its teachings all at once; it invites us to return, season after season, and to let each turn of the circle reveal a little more of ourselves. As you continue through the posts that follow, carry this map gently in your heart, and let the wheel turn you toward the wholeness that has always been your birthright.
