The Turning Toward Stillness

Balance, Release, and the Wisdom of Letting Go

The Autumn Equinox is the second harvest of the wheel — a moment when day and night stand once again in balance, and the earth offers the last of its abundance before the descent into winter. It is a ceremony of release, of equilibrium, and of the wisdom that comes from letting go.

Where the First Harvest celebrated what we had grown, the Autumn Equinox asks us to discern what is ours to keep and what is ours to release. The energy of the wheel is turning inward, and we are invited to:

  • honor the balance between light and dark within us
  • release what no longer supports our growth
  • stabilize our foundations for the season ahead

Connected again to the Earth element, the Mineral Kingdom, and the Physical Body, this equinox reminds us that true balance is not static but dynamic — a living equilibrium that we tend moment by moment.

The equinox is a threshold, and thresholds ask us to be honest. What have we carried through the summer that is now too heavy for the road ahead? What beliefs, commitments, or habits served us in one season but will hinder us in the next? The second harvest is the moment to sort the grain from the chaff, keeping what nourishes and releasing what does not.

Balance, the great teaching of the equinox, is not a fixed point we reach and hold. It is a living rhythm, like the breath — an ongoing adjustment between giving and receiving, action and rest, light and dark. When we honor this rhythm within ourselves, we stop forcing life into rigid shapes and begin to move with its natural flow.

The mineral kingdom grounds us in this season of turning. Just as stone holds its form through the changing weather, we are invited to find the stable core within ourselves — the values and truths that do not change even as the seasons do. From this foundation, we can release what is temporary without fear.

Ceremony gives our release a container. When we mark the turning of the season with ritual — a simple offering, a moment of silence, a gathering of loved ones — we make the invisible visible and give our inner work a place in the outer world. The equinox ceremony is not about performing but about remembering: remembering that we are part of a larger rhythm, and that our small letting-goes are woven into the great turning of the year.

The physical body is our anchor in this season of release. As the days shorten and the air grows cool, the body naturally begins to slow, to gather, and to prepare for rest. Honoring these signals — eating warming foods, moving more gently, sleeping a little longer — is itself a form of ceremony. When we tend the body with care, we give ourselves the strength to meet the deeper stillness of winter without resistance.

The second harvest also teaches us about discernment, a quality the wheel asks of us again and again. Not everything that grows is meant to be kept; not every lesson is meant to be carried forever. To discern is to look honestly at what we hold and to ask whether it nourishes us or merely weighs us down. This is not a cold cutting away but a loving sorting, done with the same care a gardener gives to the ripened field. The Singing to the Plants archive explores how Amazonian plant spirit healers work with the living intelligence of the plant kingdom in their ceremonies — a reminder that the wisdom we harvest is not only our own but part of a larger, living web.

Through ceremony and reflection, we learn to meet the turning of the year with grace, grounding ourselves in what is essential as we prepare for the deeper inner work of winter.
