Breaking Through Inner Blocks

Preparing for Renewal and Spiritual Rebirth

Germination is the subtle yet powerful moment when dormant seeds begin to awaken beneath the surface. Winter still holds the land, yet the first signs of life are stirring. This phase honors the awakening of potential within us — the dreams, ideas, and healing that have been quietly forming in the dark.

Just as a seed requires the right conditions to break open, we too must create an environment that supports our growth. Germination encourages us to:

  • break through inner blocks
  • dissolve emotional inhibitors
  • allow new inspiration to emerge

This period is about trusting the unseen. Transformation begins long before it becomes visible. Through guided journeywork, energetic clearing, and intention-setting, we learn to nurture the early stages of personal rebirth.

A seed does not force its way into the light; it softens, it absorbs moisture, and it allows the pressure within to build until the shell gives way. So too with us. The inner blocks we face — old fears, limiting beliefs, unhealed wounds — are not enemies but the very shells that must soften for new life to emerge. Germination asks us to tend these places with patience rather than force.

Emotional inhibitors often surface in this phase as restlessness, doubt, or a vague sense that something is shifting. Rather than pushing these feelings away, we are invited to sit with them, to name them, and to let them be composted into fuel for growth. What we refuse to feel cannot transform; what we welcome with compassion becomes the soil of renewal.

Intention-setting is the gardener's work of this season. Just as a gardener prepares the bed and chooses the seed, we choose the qualities we wish to grow — courage, clarity, love, purpose — and we plant them in the fertile dark of late winter. These intentions do not need to be grand; they need only to be sincere.

Guided journeywork is one of the most powerful tools of this season. In a journey, we allow the inner landscape to unfold before us, meeting the images, guides, and feelings that arise from the depths. These are not fantasies to be dismissed but messages from the parts of ourselves that have been waiting in the dark to be heard. Energetic clearing — through breath, sound, or ceremony — helps to remove the debris that blocks the seed from breaking open.

The element of earth supports this phase, reminding us that growth always begins in the dark, rich soil of our own being. Just as a seed needs warmth, moisture, and time, our awakening needs the right conditions — rest, nourishment, and a safe inner space in which to unfold. Germination is not a time to force the shoot above the surface before it is ready; it is a time to trust the slow, invisible work happening below. The ethnobotanical history of how Indigenous peoples have understood and worked with plants for healing is documented in the Oxford Academic volume Plant Drugs and Shamanism in the Americas, a reminder that the awakening of the seed has been honored as sacred medicine across cultures for millennia.

The animal kingdom, too, has wisdom for this season. The hibernating bear does not rush its awakening; it stirs gradually, in its own time, when the conditions are right. In the same way, we are invited to honor our own pace of emergence. What feels like delay is often simply the necessary time for the inner life to gather enough strength to break through — and when it does, it does so with a vitality that cannot be rushed.

Germination is the bridge between stillness and movement. It offers the first spark of renewal that will blossom into the clarity and vitality of spring. To honor this season is to honor the quiet courage it takes to begin again.
