Letting Go of What No Longer Serves

Grounding Into Earth, the Mineral Kingdom, and the Physical Body

Autumn is the beginning of the Medicine Wheel cycle. As the leaves turn gold and fall to the earth, nature shows us the first great teaching of the wheel: the wisdom of release. What has served its purpose is gently let go, so that new life may eventually take root.

This season is held by the Earth element, the Mineral Kingdom, and the Physical Body. It calls us to slow down, to feel our feet on the ground, and to tend to the temple of the body. Autumn asks:

  • what am I ready to release?
  • what habits, emotions, or attachments weigh me down?
  • what in my life is asking to be composted into wisdom?

The energy of Autumn is grounding and clarifying. It is a time to gather the lessons of the year, to honor what was, and to consciously clear space within. Through ceremony, reflection, and the simple act of letting go, we prepare the soil of the soul for the deep inner work that winter will bring.

In the wheel, Autumn belongs to the West — the direction of water, emotion, and the setting sun. Here we are asked to look honestly at what we carry, and to name the burdens that no longer belong to us. The mineral kingdom reminds us that even the hardest stone is shaped by time and water, and that our own foundations are strengthened when we allow the unnecessary to fall away.

The physical body is our first teacher in this season. As the days shorten, the body naturally wants to rest more, to eat more grounding foods, and to move more slowly. Honoring these signals is itself a form of ceremony. When we tend the body with warmth, nourishment, and care, we build the strength we will need for the stillness of winter.

When we resist the release that Autumn asks of us, we carry the dead weight of the past into the stillness of winter. When we surrender to it, we discover that letting go is itself a form of abundance — a making of room for what is yet to come. Research published in the URNCST Journal shows how consciously moving through the full cycle of the wheel supports psychological and holistic health, and release is where that healing rhythm begins.

Release is not the same as rejection. When we let go of what no longer serves us, we do not cast it away in anger; we honor it for the role it played and thank it for its teaching. The relationship that ended, the job that was outgrown, the belief that once protected us — each has carried us to this point. Autumn asks us to release with gratitude, so that nothing is left unfinished in the heart.

Autumn also asks us to honor the ancestors and the wisdom of the West. In many traditions the setting sun is the doorway to the unseen, and the falling leaves remind us that nothing truly disappears — it only changes form and returns to the earth that nourished it. As we release our own burdens, we join a rhythm far older than ourselves, one that has carried every generation through the turning of the year.

The water of the West teaches us to move with emotion rather than against it. Just as a river does not fight the stones in its path but flows around them, we are invited to let our feelings find their way through us. Grief, gratitude, and quiet joy all have their place in autumn, and when we give them room to move, the heart is left lighter and more open for the season of stillness ahead.

A simple practice for this season is to write down what you are ready to release, and to offer it to the earth with gratitude — a leaf, a stone, or a whispered word. In this small ritual, the wheel begins to turn, and the ground is cleared for the deep inner work that the coming months will hold.
